Fifty years ago when Daniel Ellsberg leaked The Pentagon Papers, he did not disclose another top secret study of the Taiwan Strait crisis. He did so recently, as tensions are high between the US and China over Taiwan. Now 90, he wants to be prosecuted for leaking information so he can challenge the Justice Department.
Ellsberg shows that in 1958 US military leaders—including Gen. Laurence S. Kutner, the top Air Force Commander in the Pacific—were urging the use of nuclear weapons if the Chinese further shelled offshore islands.
